All You Need to Know About Ceramides

Shopping for skincare can sometimes feel daunting because there are so many interesting active ingredients and so little time to truly learn how they will benefit your skin. For this reason, Team Eunogo has set out to create a series of “All You Need to Know” about the active ingredients found in the products we carry at Eunogo Shop. This should make it easier to understand exactly what you are putting onto your face (and don’t forget your neck!) This Beauty Journal will focus on Ceramide - an often ignored, but very important active ingredient for proper skin care.

What Is Ceramide?

First, it is worth noting that ceramide occurs naturally within your body and is one of nine lipids in your epidermis (the top layer of your skin). Take a close look at the back of your hand. See how your skin looks textured, almost like bricks and mortar keeping them together? Well, Ceramide is one of the lipids that makes up the “mortar;” essentially, ceramides help maintain your skin barrier and keep moisture locked inside your skin. If your epidermis is lacking ceramides, you may experience it as rough, flaky and dry skin conditions.

Why is Ceramide So Popular?

As mentioned above, ceramides help make up a healthy skin barrier. Your skin barrier is crucial to the health of your skin because that combination of 9 lipids is what keeps moisture inside, while keeping damage and bacteria outside. If your skin barrier is compromised, no matter how much money you spend on products, it will all be for naught.

Ceramide production in our body can also decrease with age, so ceramides are a worthwhile investment because they will help replace the lipids you may be losing due to aging, skin damage from environmental factors, as well as chronic dryness. The reason ceramides are so popular is because they work effectively and extra hard to counteract all of these issues and to help your skin maintain moisture where it belongs. Ceramides are the building blocks of our natural skin barrier and their importance cannot be understated.

Is there a difference between natural Ceramide and skincare formulated Ceramide?

The short answer is, no. The good news is that naturally occurring ceramides and those that are created in a lab for topical application through skincare are virtually bioidentical (meaning, they are nearly the same). This means that even though our body may produce less of these fatty lipids as we age, we can still maintain a high level of ceramide for our skin with ceramide-rich products.

Should You Try It?

Ceramides are generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and for people who have sensitive skin. In fact, if you happen to suffer from skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, you are likely already familiar with creams that have a high concentration of ceramide to help treat these issues. The other great news is that ceramides are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. Although the rich feel of the cream may leave you skeptical, science says you’re absolutely fine using it on acne-prone skin as well. As always, be sure to patch test the product on your inner arm first. Ceramide is a perfect ingredient for aging skin, dry skin, anyone living in a cold/dry climate, and even acne prone skin. Once you’ve safely tested it, the sky’s the limit!
