HIFU AFTERCARE: DO’S & DON’TS

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU in short, is one of the most commonly done non-invasive treatments for facial aging worldwide such as lifting procedures. There are different types of HIFU treatments such as Ultherapy (microfocused ultrasound), Thermage, Shurink, and Doublo. It is important to note that aftercare is often as important as the treatment itself. After sharing aftercare tips for CO2 laser in a previous journal, based on your DMs and YouTube comments, we decided that HIFU aftercare would be a great choice for the next article of Eunogo Shop’s aftercare series.

WHY IS AFTERCARE IMPORTANT?

Unlike other procedures like CO2 laser, fractional laser or microneedling, HIFU does not touch the surface of your skin, so you will not see visible damage. However, depending on the individual, you may experience some swelling, redness or irritation. Therefore, having HIFU aftercare is extremely important to accelerate the healing process and maximize the effect of HIFU treatment.

Since you've spent a lot of time, energy, and money on your HIFU treatment, we've spoken to Dermatologists and Clinics in Seoul to make sure you invest in proper home care to ensure the best results out of your HIFU treatment. As always, we want to remind you that the tips listed here are general guidelines and you should always consult your dermatologist regarding your own personal aftercare.

WHAT TO AVOID AFTER HIFU TREATMENT

1. Do not exfoliate or scrub for a week.

No exfoliation or scrub for a week to prevent further irritation to your skin. As you may have guessed, more inflammation will not help your healing process.

2. Do not consume alcohol, smoke, or visit the sauna.

Please avoid consuming alcohol, smoking or visiting the sauna to prevent any skin inflammation after the procedure.

3. Do not use ice packs on your skin.

You may be tempted to use ice packs to reduce swelling on your skin after the treatment. However, many Korean dermatologists advise to avoid using ice packs on your skin after HIFU treatments like Ultherapy and Thermage, to maintain the effectiveness of the treatment. Instead, you can use a gentle and cooling sheet mask at room temperature to calm your skin, specifically one that is good for hydrating, soothing and cooling your skin.

4. Do not use skincare products with active ingredients.

After HIFU treatment, avoid using skincare products with active ingredients such as retinol and Vitamin C. Instead, you should focus on soothing and moisturizing as your skin becomes very sensitive from the treatment.

WHAT PRODUCTS DOES EUNOGO SHOP RECOMMEND AFTER HIFU TREATMENT?

Let’s move on to what products you should use after your HIFU treatment to ensure you get the best results. Because our skin is irritated and the skin barrier is weakened, there are certain skincare ingredients that are recommended to use to help promote healing and skin regeneration process.

1. Use gentle facial cleansers

After any treatments, your skin may get irritated and dry out easily during the first couple of weeks. In this case you should use a gentle facial cleanser to avoid any skin irritation, especially avoid those that contain alcohol. Eunogo Shop recommends using the De:maf All Day Glow Milk Cleanser, a gentle and mild cleanser that keeps your skin hydrated and moisturized. Formulated with carefully selected ingredients like broccoli extract, and madecassoside to moisturize and strengthen your skin barrier, your skin will feel moist and soft after cleansing.

De:maf All Day Glow Creamy Milk Cleanser

2. Moisturize your skin using hydrating products.

As your skin may get very dry after the HIFU treatment, we recommend using products with hydrating ingredients. If you are using skincare products made for skin brightening or anti-aging, we advise you to stop using those for the first two weeks post-procedure. Instead, you can replace with gentle and mild products made for skin moisturization, hydration and soothing.

Team Eunogo recommends using the De:maf Here-Oh My First Serum after cleansing. This can be used as a toner, highly suitable for people with extremely sensitive skin that can get irritated easily as De:maf Here-Oh My First Serum is made with premium quality hyaluronic acid, macadamia seed oil, jojoba oil and evening primrose flower extracts to strengthen your skin barrier and keep your skin hydrated and supple all day long.

Afterwards, you can layer with a hydrating cream such as the De:maf Creams Come True that provides instant hydration and contains complex ingredients to strengthen your skin barrier, creating moist and glowing skin without clogging pores.

3. Wear SPF daily (100% mineral, SPF30 or more).

We recommend using a 100% mineral sunscreen with SPF30 or more after HIFU treatment. Team Eunogo recommends the Rovectin Anti-Irritant UV Defense Tinted SPF50+ PA++++ that helps to relieve and calm your skin without greasy residue or white cast.

4. Use a gentle makeup product.

According to many Korean dermatologists, it is okay to wear makeup on the same day as your HIFU treatment, but it’s better to wear makeup products made with gentle ingredients to avoid skin irritation. Our pick? Consider the OxygenCeuticals Intensive Blemish Balm, a all-in-one complexion perfector that hydrates, smooth fine lines, and correct dullness and enlarged pores made for sensitive skin and post-procedure usage. Alternatively, Team Eunogo also likes the Ceramine Essence BB Cushion made with a super-hydrating formula that strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving a radiant glow while concealing blemishes.

5. Drink LOTS of water and have sufficient sleep.

Remember to hydrate not only your skin, but also your body! Also, having enough rest helps in the skin recovery process.

6. Take Vitamin C and collagen supplements.

Did you know that Vitamin C helps in skin regeneration? Collagen supplements can also be a great way to take better care of your skin and body. Team Eunogo recommends the Denps Innersil Collagen Shot for your daily collagen boost. It contains 3,270mg of Fish Collagen Peptide and 1000% of Biotin based on the percentage of Daily Korean Nutritional Standards to support skin health and healthy immune system. As your collagen rebuilds from the HIFU procedure, a collagen supplement is an easy way to boost production.
