What is My Skin Type? And How to Build Your Skincare Routine

Knowing your skin type is important when it comes to building a right skincare routine for yourself.

What is My Skin Type?

There are 4 different skin types based on how much water is in your skin: Oily, Dry, Combination and Normal. Also skin type can change over time as you age or move into a different climate. Let’s examine each type and whichever one sounds most like you is your skin type. We have also included our handy guides to 7-Step Korean Beauty Skincare for each of the skin-types below:

Oily Skin

If you tend to have an overproduction of sebum (the natural oil found on your skin), then you probably have Oily Type skin. It can make your skin appear shiny (not glowy) or even greasy, and is almost always a perfect environment for pesky blackheads. For some, the overproduction of sebum also leads to periodic breakouts, chronic acne and enlarged pores.

The level of oil on your face may also change depending on the weather or time of the year, mainly affected by heat or humidity. Those with oily skin may experience their symptoms as a stress-related or hormonal change imbalance. You can find Eunogo Shop’s 7 Step K-Beauty for Beginners: Oily Skin Edition here.

Dry Skin

As you may have guessed, Dry Type skin is basically the opposite of oily. It can feel dry to the touch, visually dull and overall lack the oil that our skin needs to regulate itself and keep the skin barrier balanced. Some Dry Types may experience skin that feels rough and peels, and worst of all, lines on your face are more visible.

One easy way to tell if your skin is Dry Type is that after cleansing and if you do not apply any moisturizer within 30 minutes, your skin feels flaky or tight. Or if you apply toner and moisturizer and it seems like your skin just “drinks it right up” without any major benefit. This may mean you need to layer products differently, or buy products more suitable for Dry Type skin. You can find Eunogo Shop’s 7 Step K-Beauty for Beginners: Dry Skin Edition here.

Please keep in mind that Dry Type skin is very different from Dehydrated skin, which can be caused by weather conditions and not enough water intake.  Some people use these two terms interchangeably but it is inaccurate to call Dry Type skin dehydrated, because dehydration can happen to anyone, regardless of what skin type they have!  You can click here to read Team Eunogo’s tips for managing dehydrated skin.

Combination Skin

It should not come as a surprise that most people actually have Combination skin, meaning a combination of Dry and Oily type.  For many it is Dry around the cheek area and oily in the T-zone, or the forehead, nose and chin (it makes a letter T-shape). People with Combination Type skin will often need to address the dryness around the cheeks and the enlarged pores/excess sebum that occurs on the forehead and nose. Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin can have a range of ways to tell that their skin type is Sensitive.  Although it can be argued that any of the previously-mentioned skin types (Oily, Dry, Combo) can also be simultaneously sensitive, the truth of the matter is that if you have Sensitive skin you should be very conscious about the types of products you will choose for yourself.  Generally, skin sensitivity stems from a weakened skin moisture barrier, but can also be caused by external factors such as allergies or environment.

Sensitive Type skin may display itself as a mild irritation but in some cases can cause breakouts, severe redness, and itching. For some, none of these symptoms may appear and they just feel a general discomfort when using products unsuitable for their Sensitive skin type. Usually the types of products recommended for Sensitive skin will include botanicals as well as Ceramides to help repair and maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Normal Skin

Last, but not least, we come to Normal Type skin. Generally speaking, if your skin is Normal Type skin it means you have a well-balanced skin barrier and no major concerns like enlarged pores or excess sebum. Most likely, you have no to very few imperfections, no severe skin sensitivity, a glowing, radiant complexion, and barely visible pores.
